CLIFTON KARHU
Born in Duluth, Minnesota, U.S.A., in 1927, he has been living and painting landscapes and buildings in Japan since 1955. His elegant, grandiose, and unique works have won him many fans in Japan and abroad.
In his later years, he moved to Shukei-cho, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. For the next 12 years, he lived in a former teahouse, where he also had a studio, and devoted himself to creating works that depicted the scenery of Kanazawa. He has held exhibitions in major cities throughout Japan and the world, including exhibitions at local department stores. In 2007, he passed away at the age of 80.
His prints are called creative prints, and are characterized by the fact that he alone performs all the processes of woodblock printing: sketching, carving, and rubbing. The colors change each time depending on how the woodblocks are layered, so this is not a printmaking process in which many of the same prints are made. In addition, since he breaks the woodblocks himself at the end, he cannot make new prints in the future, which makes his prints rare and valuable.
