Yitzhak Frenkel (Frenel), Israeli, born in the Russian Empire, 1899-1981.

Yitzhak Alexander Frenel was born in Odessa, the Russian Empire (now Ukraine).

He was the great-grandson of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev and was awarded

a religious education in the Heder . In 1917 he began studying art at the Academy

of Art in Odessa, where he studied with Alexandra Ekster. In 1919 Frenkel decorated

the newspaper Eretz , which was published by Shlomo Zemach and Eliezer Steinman in Odessa.

This year he immigrated to Israel on the ship Ruslan and settled in Tel Aviv.

In 1920 he was a partner in the founding of the modern art cooperative The Tomer

and founded a school of painting in the area of ​​the Gymnasia Herzliya.

Between 1920 and 1925 he lived in Paris, where he studied art and was exposed

to modern painting. In addition to studying at the Beaux-Arts and at the Grand Chumier

Academy, he also studied sculpture with Bourdelle and painting in Henri Matisse s studio.

Upon his return to Israel, he was among the founders of the Egged and Massad

groups and participated in the Modern Artists Exhibition (1926) in the Ohel .

 In addition, he taught painting at a school he founded under the auspices of the

Histadrut labor federation.

Between 1934 and 1929 he returned to Paris and approached the artists of the Paris School.

He was one of the leading Jewish artists of École de Paris.

 After his return, he re-established the school and engaged in education

and design for the Ohel and Habima theaters. In 1934 he purchased

another house in Safed and in 1949 was one of the founders of the

Artists Colony in the city. In 1948, he was invited to commemorate the first

General Staff meeting, the first Knesset sitting and created portraits of Knesset

.members, and from 1953 he lived in Israel and Paris

Frenkel s early work, from the 1920s, is characterized by an avant-garde style.

He has often created abstract works. In 1934 he abandoned the abstract style

and moved to paint under the influence of Expressionist art, especially that

of the School of Paris . His subjects included mainly portraits and

landscape descriptions. He died in 1981 and was buried in Safed.
