Original Oil on Canvas Study of Shirtless Man Herbert Bohnert Circa 1910
Herbert Bohnert original painting, oil on canvas. This painting is a portrait of a young and attractive man wearing wearing what a appears to be a Spanish costume without a shirt, while holding a gun. It is possible that this is meant to be a Gypsy man holding a gun. This painting is most likely from his earliest, period around 1910, as it appears to be a study from art class, or a painting done from a life model.
Herbert Bohnert (1888-1967) was an American artist and very successful illustrator. Born in Cleveland, Ohio. He went to New York to study at the Art Students League, beginning his career doing illustrations for several magazine covers, among them, Harper’s, Collier’s, The Metropolitan, and The Munsey. Like his contemporary Norman Rockwell, Bohnert s illustrational style was naturalistic and attentive to the nuances of facial expression, costume and setting to convey character. He was the creator of the original Little Dutch Boy paint company trademark. Bohnert was the official poster creator for US Government War Bonds for Father’s Day, June, 1944. He lived in Hastings-On-Hudson. Today there is an annual prize that bears the name “Herbert and Rosetta (his wife) Memorial Award”. There’s a letter from President Dwight Eisenhower that establishes that Bohnert was honored at the Hudson Valley Art Association. (I have a copy of the letter). He continued a very successful career as an advertising illustrator in New York City. His work is featured at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Museum, Washington, D.C., Cleveland Museum of Art, South Carolina State Museum, Texas State University Museum, New Britain Museum of American Art, among others.
Bohnert was a member of the Society of Illustrators, the Salmagundi Club, the Artists Guild NY, the Cleveland Society of Art, Allied Artists of America, Hudson Valley Art Association, Yonkers Art Association, Cleveland Art Club, National Arts Club (Chairman, Exhibition Committee), Allied Artists of America, American Artists Professional League (National Board), Director of the Hudson Valley Art Association (Gold Medal, 1961), the Council of American Art Societies (Director), and the Council of American Art Societies.
