The Paloma & Fico Workshop is composed of María del Pilar (Paloma) Defendini López and Federico (Fico) Hernández Soto in Puerto Rico. Fico learned to work metal with his wife, Paloma. She took courses on the technique of embossed metal in 1993. He also took painting courses in Caguas, Puerto Rico. For his part, Fico took courses in drawing and calligraphy at the Art League, located in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. At Paloma s urging, he began to paint the pieces. Both artisans are certified by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, the Office of Artisanal Development of Fomento de Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.
What is embossed metal?
The technique of metal embossing is very old. It has been practiced for thousands of years. A design is worked on aluminum, a metal mostly used by artisans. Silver, bronze, copper and tin can also be used. The design is drawn from the back of the metal. Then, it is turned straight ahead and the edges are outlined to achieve relief. The deeper parts are filled in and the metal is adhered to wood, metal, glass or some other medium. In some pieces, the design is placed around a painting of a typical figure, landscape or print. Both metal and wood are added a dye (different from each) to give an effect of antiquity. In certain pieces, gold, silver or bronze leaf is added. This technique further highlights the effect of antiquity, part of the characteristic style of these artisans. Other pieces do not carry an original painting, but a reproduction of some painting made by the artists. They never use prints or paintings by other artists or artisans, unless it is a piece worked together.
