Description
Oil on mixed media canvas. Original.
24”x18”
31”x24” with frame
This work represents the portrait of two sisters, Lili and Nadia Bounlanger based on the famous painting Las Dos Fridas by Frida Kahlo. In this work we can see the two sisters, not only connected by flesh and blood, but also by their musical talents. Lili on the left holds her Prix de Rome winning title and Nadia holds the baton, symbolizing the first woman to conduct a major US Orchestra. Within the details of the painting, we can see pieces of Lili’s most famous music manuscripts surrounded also by empty spaces symbolizing her unfinished works due to a premature death. The empty spaces also represent the many women composers that still are not being recognize today.
The work is a mixed media collage on canvas. The dimensions of the piece are 24 “x18”.
The inspiration for this piece came after being involve with the DC base non-profit organization called Boulanger Initiative. The mission of this organization is to promote compositions written by women composers through performance, education, and commissions.
It was through this organization that I began to realize the great gender inequality that exist in the world of classical music. So, this work represents my effort as a visual artist to shed light on this issue and to highlight these two historical women that provided inspiration to many composers today.
